Mickey Cake

This is the cake I made for my son's 4th birthday this year.  I took the clubhouse template from Disney's website, then made my characters out of fondant.  We found out that the colors will change if left in the sun, so next time we'll not bring the cake out until the last minute.  The kids all loved it.  As did my Mickey Mouse crazy boy.  The main cake is butter cream, then the clubhouse is color flow icing.  I was not entirely happy with how the color flow turned out, it was still sticky and cracked when we tried to transfer it.  I may experiment next time with putting the color flow directly on the cake.  It turned out that we had to invert the image to get it onto the cake, then i had to touch up a few sections, but it turned out good.  All the color leeched out of the pinks and purples when in the sun, and the blues got darker.  It was interesting.

Service

I donated a cake for our Service Auction this year. She wanted something with trains for her son's 5th birthday. I was torn between doing the cake all in fondant or butter cream. Kids don't care about looks, only taste, so I decided to do a combination of both. I iced this cake in butter cream and did the train in fondant. I wish the lines had been a smoother cut, but I didn't have the right tool. I found out from a friend later that I could have used a pizza cutter. The clouds and wording is in butter cream.

Grandma's 75th Birthday

I had planned on making just a small cake for my Grandma's 75th birthday, but then my coworker asked me to make her wedding cake and so I used Grandma's cake to practice on. I tried making my fondant a big firmer and that helped a TON with making it smooth. I also need to make more fondant when i cover the cakes because i had to patch a few spots on this cake. No one really noticed or cared, but I do! Plus they will notice on a wedding cake. It was a great opportunity to practice with fondant.

2nd Birthday!

I made these cakes for my son's 2nd birthday! He was in love with Cars and I liked the fact that I could make 2 cakes with the same recipe and he was turning 2, so it worked. I was not so happy with how they started leaning to one side, but no one really cared but me anyway. I let my mom practice her icing skills on the green one.

Extra Frosting

What do you do when you have a fridge full of extra frosting in a bunch of random colors? This was a great way to use it all up!

This was just a fun cake I made for my coworker's birthday.

1st Birthday

These are the cakes I made for my son's first birthday. At the time he was completely obsessed with Nemo. We had a big group, so I made a small one just for him and a 2 tier for the family. This was my first tiered cake and I should have doubled it.

Ladybug and Family Tree

This is a cake that I helped my Grandma make. She baked the cakes and frosted the base layers, all I did was the grass, flowers and dots. Still, it turned out super cute!

This was made for a family reunion and I took the idea from my Wilton cake class book. Everyone loved it!

For Friends

My little cousin was baptized and asked for an angel cake and this was the creation I came up with. I swear the hardest part of this cake was getting that doll's hair to look normal!

I have a girlfriend who when I first met her wore high heels EVERY day, rain or shine. For her birthday I made her this cake with a high heeled shoe. It was originally an open toed shoe, until I messed up. Thankfully I was able to fix my mistake by making it a closed toe shoe instead.

Beginnings

I am doing a cake for someone in my ward and she asked me for pictures of my cakes. I decided that a blog would be much easier than emailing pictures every time. These are my very first cakes! These were done in early 2008 and I have learned so much since then. Most of my cakes have a specific technique that I am trying out or theme that I want to portray. In these cakes I learned how to use piping gel to trace an outline (rainbow) and how to make roses. The Valentine cake was my very first cake. I made it for my husband and it's a good thing he doesn't care much for looks, because this one is a wreck! It's fun to look back and see how much I've grown.
